Alliance. Portugal and England are the world’s oldest alliance it has a bond that exists closely even today. The alliance dates back to the 13th century, as far back as 1147 the king of Portugal Afonso Henriques made Englishman Gilbert of Hastings the Bishop of Lisbon. All through history from fighting the Spanish armadas, to the Napoleons invasion attempt, and the Second World War, the 2 countries have remained close to this day. Queen Elizabeth II has had 2 state visits to Portugal one in 1957 and 1985.

Language. Many people who come on holiday to Portugal will try to learn the odd word for their holiday. But what they may not know is Portuguese is recognised as an international language. The 5th most spoken language in the world and the 3rd most spoken in Europe after English and Spanish. Spoken worldwide by over 250 million people, the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique.
