Loule

The City of Loule in Central Algarve has a very cosmopolitan feel, nicknamed the Golden triangle.  The main municipal council for Vilamoura making it one of the richest in the region. With few palm trees but very green, tree lined avenues with a café culture. The main street (José da Costa Mealha), has a small parkland strip running through the centre, with park benches, band stand with marble sculpture’s.

Small kiosks where you can sit and have coffee, whilst traffic and people are all around you, it still gives a calming atmosphere to relax.

Loule famous for its Saturday markets that can bring hustle and bustle to the city,

Parking in the City can be near impossible in the summer months. As can the carnival season as Loule Carnival is one of the biggest Events in Loule and is famous across the Algarve with floats coming from Brazil. It takes places in February or March (runs for 3 days, the 3rd day is Shrove Tuesday).

Loule has many shops found among back lanes; Loule is a large city offering most thing of interest including galleries, public swimming pool, chapels, museum’s.

The daily market held 6 days a week in a Moorish style building looking as though it belongs more in morocco than Portugal.  All are within easy walking distance from the City centre.

On the history side it has a castle dating back to the 12th Century. The Arab moors castle has been virtually destroyed leaving some walls still standing that are now surrounded by modern buildings. Like most other towns in Portugal, most of the older buildings destroyed in the earthquake that occurred in 1755.

Gothic arches and side chapels dating from the 16th Century have survived, they can be found in the back streets. With gift shops selling copperware, leather, cane, and wooden items. There is a Museum that is devoted to the local industry of dried fruits.  Interesting to see how these products are prepared for storage.
