The notes are differentiated by their size and colour and come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros. However in 2010 the 500 note was being used less in circulation due to money laundering

It is unfortunate to say that whilst on holiday wallets/purses are lost or stolen all over the world and not just Portugal, when traveling abroad it is a good idea to empty wallets and purses to a minimum as many cards you carry will never be used whilst on holiday, and this will save you the trouble of having to report them in any such event, the same way it is not wise to carry large amount of money, Due to the chip and pin system being introduced it is common when wallets/purses are stolen that they are nearly always found with all the contents with the exception of the cash as the cards are of no use with out the pin , Do check at your nearest Police station as quiet often they are handed in as the Portuguese are a honest nation Statistics show most crime committed are normally from other nations living in Portugal
