Praia da Rocha in western Algarve comes under the district of Portimao. The town has much to offer from five star hotels, and casino, to smaller holiday apartments. Praia da Rocha underwent the extensive upgrading in the last few years offering great walking areas with black and white traditional cobbled walkways.
Many of the main roads have dedicated cycle paths. When entering from the west, large impressive water feature roundabout, with water jets reaching 8 meters high. The main feature of Praia da Rocha has to be the fantastic coastal views, and huge wide beach. Walking decking running the full length of the beach down towards the rock caves, making easy access for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Even the busy months of July/ August you will always find plenty of space on the beach. Praia da Rocha has much history, with the 16th century fortress (Santa Catarina de Ribamar) at the Eastern end, overlooking the Marina with views across to Ferragudo. On the Ferragudo side is the fortress (Fort Soa Joao Arade) the two forts protected the river mouth making it almost impossible to invade during the 16th and 17th century.
The Small Praia da Rocha Marina with many townhouses all painted the same color, giving a good backdrop to the views across the river. There are great opportunities for the many boat rides on offer. One of the ships that offer such trips is the wooden traditional pirate galleon ship that is often seen sailing out of the harbor into the ocean.
