Vila Real de Santo Antonio in eastern Algarve situated at the far North West tip of Portugal. The city lies on the Guadiana River bordering Spain with the river flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. With views of the city of Ayamonte on the Spanish side.
Vila real has always had a history of fishing which over the years has declined and with the new marina built in 1998 now housing many luxury boats. Very popular being so close to the Mediterranean Sea, with its easy access to the rest of Europe. The riverfront is often the point where many fairs are held typically is the monthly Antiques market with buyers and dealers flocking from the Spanish border to snap up a bargain. The Market normally held in the Main Square, but often than not, many craft and others fairs use the square. If you want to go to Spain by ferry the building Avenida da Republica is the building which was once used for customs control. Where you can buy ferry tickets for crossing to Ayamonte in Spain or various river tours. easy to recognise with beautiful hand painted tiles along the kilometre long riverside promenade, which is attractively laid out with trees and water features and there is also a marina where you can watch the boats. Part of the Avenida da Republica runs along adjacent to the Rio Guadianathe front of the city, with evidence that Vila Real once had wealth with elaborate design buildings some which were grand hotels in there day
